UNS Justice is a mixed cargo-and-passenger spacecraft representative of the first mature generation of nuclear-thermal interplanetary ships in The Mine.

Real-world basis

Its propulsion lineage is nuclear thermal propulsion: a fission reactor heats hydrogen and exhausts it through a rocket nozzle. NASA continues to develop this approach because it can offer substantially greater propellant efficiency than conventional chemical propulsion. Its docking architecture descends from the International Docking System Standard, which provides interoperable interfaces for independently developed spacecraft.

Mapmakers development

The 2044 ship is built for vacuum and lunar operations rather than atmospheric flight. Nuclear thermal propulsion handles major interplanetary maneuvers, while separate close-range propulsion is used around inhabited facilities. Its mixed cargo/passenger design allows the interior arrangement and payload complement to be changed for different missions without redesigning the spacecraft.
