Shell SunGas Tanger Synthetic-Fuel Complex

Fictional or future equipment, with real-world baseline distinguished where applicable

Industrial concept

SunGas Tanger is an integrated synthetic-hydrocarbon production complex. Its future industrial route couples renewable electrical generation and carbon-feedstock preparation to hydrogen production, synthesis-gas conditioning, chemical synthesis, product upgrading, storage and export. The key distinction from a petroleum refinery is the source of carbon and process energy, not the abandonment of industrial chemical processing.

Physical architecture and scale

In Mapmakers canon, a remote Shell-owned solar district near Midelt supplies the power system, while the production, terminal and logistics infrastructure is concentrated near Tanger Med. The complex reuses compatible terminal land and transport connections but employs purpose-built systems where liquid CO₂ transfer, pressure control, conditioning and metering require them. The canonical 2043 design references roughly 400 GWp of solar generation and approximately 35 million tonnes per year of synthetic-fuels production. These are fictional future specifications, not today’s Shell capacity.

Carbon accounting

An in-universe corporate claim describes potential removal of up to 55 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. Removal capacity is not the same as independently verified, permanent net carbon removal; lifecycle emissions also depend on electrical inputs, captured carbon origin, fuel end use and accounting boundaries. A technology reference must preserve that distinction.
