ISS2 is humanity’s primary Earth-orbit interchange between reusable launch systems and the deep-space ships and tugs operating beyond Earth.
Real-world basis
Its lineage comes from decades of International Space Station operations and the commercial low-Earth-orbit destinations NASA is developing as successors to the ISS era. The fictional step is scale and role: by 2044, orbital transfer, passenger processing, cargo sorting, medicine, maintenance coordination, and onward assignment have become routine transportation infrastructure.
Operating concept
Deep-space ships complete major propulsion work before entering the station approach zone and use close-range maneuvering systems for rendezvous and docking around inhabited infrastructure.
