OFM-1 is an HD Hyundai orbital nickel-alloy fabricator intended to manufacture large structural and industrial components directly in space.
Real-world basis
Metal additive manufacturing has already reached orbit in experimental form, while NASA and commercial partners continue work toward more autonomous on-demand manufacturing away from Earth. OFM-1 extrapolates that research from small parts into industrial production.
In The Mine
An OFM-1 is initially the planned payload aboard the HLV-4 later reassigned during the emergency. The fabricator itself never becomes part of the emergency system; its significance is that peaceful orbital industry has already justified building a launcher of extraordinary scale.
