Overview

The AE-8 provided the first operational American Watchtower capability while the larger AE-87 Sheriff was still being developed and produced.

Production history

Unlike the mature -87, -90, and -92 families, the AE-8 began with existing P-8 aircraft transferred from Navy service and adapted for the Watchtower mission.

Technical basis

The Boeing 737/P-8 airframe already provided long endurance, maritime patrol sensors, secure datalinks, mission consoles, and the electrical and cooling capacity needed for an interim airborne policing platform.
